Well P.U.S.H., I used Wikipedia because it is a fast way to get a list of the commandments from the Bible. Are you denying that the list of commandments is accurate? And I see you also nicely avoided admitting that these commandments are not laws, instead telling me to search for why we NEED them. The post's arguments stands.

ok you said that you found all your research through using Wikipedia....you stated "I used Wikipedia to help me sort out the commandments as they vary from version to version of the books, so we actually have 12 different rules to examine. More data points are always welcomed".

Don't get me wrong Wikipedia is a great source for info...But overall the Bible is the BEST SOURCE...Why would you look up the commandments in Wikipedia...The scriptures say in Matthew 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock,and it will be opened to you.

I don't know you...but if you "don't believe in God...why search the commandments...you must want to try to find God's faults so you won't believe...Go deeper if you want on the commandments,instead of reading it like a sentence..think "why do we need the commandment -LAW- in this world...ask yourself that question...Most of all I will pray and hope that you give Jesus Christ a chance in your life..any question email me if you like....

My mother is NOT religious. She claims to be amidst her fits of rage against me, her daughter, who has tiptoed on eggshells - no, broken glass - her whole life, trying to be good enough, or 'worth being born' in her eyes (she would point out this run-on sentence as a retired school teacher, too). She claims, in these fits, that I am evil because I have not accepted religion into my life.

Well, she never expected that of me as a child (no church, no Sunday school, no readings from the bible), and, my childhood was so messed up I doubt I would have believed in God or Jesus anyway (alcholism, abuse, drug abuse, neglect).

Today, after 'kicking me out of the house' for not looking her in the eye when she was speaking to me, she told me I could not take my laptop, or my car with me unless I could recite 4 of the 10 commandments (I am 25 years old, and pay $500 in rent to live in her home - quietly and in a cleanly manor - each month). The only one I knew was 'honour thy mother and father' because she stuffs that down my throat all the time...

When I couldn't think of more, she preceded to hit me over the head with a hard covered bible, repeatedly...

Amazing how this gesture represents how I feel about religion.

A matter of opinion? What, the fact that the commandments are not laws is not convincing in a thread about the commandments not being laws?

Would you like to back up your statement with some of your religious hand-waving?
